What Is The History Related To Colosseum?

Colosseum is situated in the heart of Rome and the structure was built with a mix of concrete, volcanic ash and limestone. The overall capacity of this amphitheater is around 50,000. Back in the Roman era, people used to gather here for a lot of entertaining activities. Various activities took place in this amphitheater namely gladiator fights, executions, drama, animal hunts, etc. This amphitheater is the cornerstone of medieval architecture. 

Who Started The Construction Of Colosseum?

The construction of this magnificent amphitheater was started by Vespasian during 72 AD, but the structure got completed by Titus in 80 AD. Then it was Domitian who made several editions in the overall structure of ColosseumThis made it even more appealing and spacious. Its name was derived from Nero’s colossal statue which was situated near the amphitheater.

What Is The Significance Of This Amphitheater In Christianity?

For Christians, Colosseum is a site where several believers of Jesus Christ were persecuted by Roman officials. As per the ancient scriptures, Atioch’s Ignatius was thrown in front of the lions during 107 AD. Back, during the Middle ages, this amphitheater didn’t get the recognition of the monument.

There is another story which states that people used to take stones of this amphitheater when they planned to lay the foundation of a new city.

Flora Related To This Amphitheater

This amphitheater is the hub of a great deal of flora. This is so because the climate in Rome allows the growth of several types of vegetation. Since the ancient era, this amphitheater attracts large flocks of exotic birds that chirp in and around the area. The presence of this monument right in the center of the city also increased its overall significance and it’s been a great sight of attraction since Ancient times.

Inside the amphitheater apart from seating arrangements, you can find special boxes at southern and northern ends. These boxes were duly reserved for vestal virgins and Emperors as they offered a great view of the amphitheater. There were a few seating in the monument where names of senators were carved by workers in calligraphy. Just above the seating arrangement of Senators, knights as well as all the other non-senatorial court men used to take respective seating during several programs.

Right above the non-senatorial seats opulent class used to take a seat while poor people of the society usually sit above them. The highest seating order provides a poor view of the amphitheater.

The total length of the arena is around 83 by 48 meters and it has a wooden framework that is completely buried by the soil. It was Domitian who provided the idea of the wooden stage. The idea was to save the original structure.
