Who Were The Five Greatest Emperors Of The Roman Empire?

Nerva was the advisor and successor of Domitian’s throne. He later laid the foundation of the Nervan-Antonin Dynasty that ruled the Roman Empire from 96 CE till 192 CE. That time is considered as the golden era for Rome as five great rulers emerged namely Trajan, Antoninus Pius, Hadrian, Nerva, and Marcus Aurelius.

They helped the Empire to flourish and become more stable than ever. Commodus and Lucius Verus were the last emperors of the Nervan-Antonin Dynasty. Verus was co-emperor to Marcus Aurelius. Furthermore, Commodus, the son of Aurelius was murdered during 192 CE which ended the golden era of the Empire.

The Roman Empire also had to face a civil war as it got divided into two parts namely the eastern and western sides. During that period various military officials tried to take control of the huge empire. Many historians also stated that during the time of civil war the Empire also had to undergo several issues related to economic instability, Empire’s dissolution, social unrest, etc.

Then during 270 CE Aurelian reunited the whole kingdom together and restored peace. After this Tetrarchy rule was established but due to the area of the Empire, it again divided into two parts during 283 CE. Then in 286 CE, Maximian developed the eastern and western Empire.

Development Of Christianity And Constantine

During 312 CE, Maxentius was defeated by Constantine at Milvian Bridge’s battle. This gave him the throne to the eastern as well as the western empire. Due to immense faith in Jesus Christ, Constantine made it mandatory throughout the empire that people should also have faith in Christianity.

Few historical scholars tried to link the faith of Constantine similar to that of several other Roman emperors who had immense faith in deities like Jupiter, Serapis, etc. At the time of his reign, Constantine stabilized the whole empire, cause reform in the military and re-evaluated currency.

He even formed New-Rome which was later called Constantinople which at present is known by the name of Istanbul. Later in life, he was given the title Constantine-the-great by his followers and was honored by many for religious belief, political reforms and due to cultural aspects.
