You might be familiar with the quote ‘I am Spartacus’, but do you actually know about the real gladiator. Born as a Thracian but later became popular, especially in Roman history. He became a famous gladiator in the first century BCE in Italy. In 73 BCE; he transformed himself as a gladiator and formed his own army. Spartacus was too dangerous for the Roman army, he was even initially planning to raise a conflict against Rome.

Spartacus Was Initially Sold As A Slave

In the initial days, he was planning to form his own army, but unfortunately, he became a slave. He was even attending the training sessions in Capua by Gnaeus Lentulus Batiatus. During his training, he was maintaining a good relationship with his friends, Oenomaus and Crixus. These guys were beneficial for Spartacus’s future.

Later Spartacus’s wife, Plutarch saw her husband sleeping with a snake near his face during the training sessions. Spartacus was showing good signs of improvement, and he was getting more superior and popular.

Spartacus Escaped From Capua With His Friends

In 73 BCE, Spartacus was getting irritated and decided to escape from Capua. He formed his first small army comprising of more than 78 slaves. They were only having kitchen knives and metal rods during the escape. But later they successfully acquired tridents and swords. They escaped from Capua and reached Mount Vesuvius, which was a volcano mountain. Later Spartacus’s army was increasing, and more slaves were joining him. He became a sign of freedom and also stood against Rome’s corrupted political system.

After the two years of escape, his army was getting more powerful, and even the citizens were also supporting him. According to history, there were more than 90,000 slaves in his army. He was becoming more dangerous; therefore many Roman armies were trying to defeat him. The first Roman army was guided by Claudius Glaber who thought that defeating Spartacus was quite easy. But, the gladiators’ army escaped from the hills and cleverly defeated Glaber. The second one was guided by Publius Varinius, who split his army but was later defeated by the gladiators’ army.

To take revenge, Varinius was asked to parade naked in the gladiators camp. The final war was led by various Roman forces. Till that time, gladiators were financially strong, and they had their own weapons. The final campaign wasn’t successful, and innumerable gladiators died due to severe weather conditions.

Spartacus’s Wife, Plutarch Was An Outstanding Prophetess And Priestess 

We don’t have much information about Spartacus and his personal life. His wife was an amazing priestess of Dionysus and a prophetess in that era. She was also born in the Thracian community. According to history, she told that Spartacus would become more powerful due to his courageous nature. But she even said that all his power would end due to bad luck.
